Day 1 : Welcome to Bukovina

You will meet with your guide and enjoy a one day tour in Bucovina, home to one of the world’s greatest art treasures: the Painted Monasteries, known in the UNESCO patrimony as the Churches of Moldavia, included since 1993. We will start our tour with a visit to Romania’s most renowned monastery: Voronet, a jewel of the UNESCO northern heritage whose frescoes -featuring an intense shade of blue- have become famous throughout the world. Not far from here is Humor Monastery, a small, cross-shaped church, built in 1530 which will delight your sight. Our next stop will be at Moldoviţa Monastery, an architectural masterpiece in the Byzantine style included among the UNESCO world heritage sites. The last visit for the day will be at Marginea, a famous folk art center, best known for black ceramics which is made here. You will witness the craft of molding clay, according to a technique unique in the world. Afterward, you will be transferred back to Iasi.

STARTS: 08:00 AM

DURATION: 12 hours

Voronet Monastery was built in 1488 in record time: three months, three weeks and three days, today being part of the UNESCO heritage. The exterior murals have preserved their hues despite centuries of inclement weather, but the ingredients used in preparing the paints are still a mystery. The scenes in the murals depict, like a movie, the history of Christianity, presented in an original manner, very much influenced by folk beliefs, by the Eastern culture, but also by the Orthodox thought.

Humor Monastery – Red hues dominate the exterior frescoes showing scenes from the Lives of Saints, as well as significant moments, from the locals’ lives, such as the wars with the Turks. In the tidy and flower-filled courtyard, silence reigns; the nuns here seem to live a life that is completely separated from the agitation outside the walls, a life that hasn’t changed in centuries.

Moldovita Monastery, included in the UNESCO heritage in 1993, was built between 1532 and 1537. For hundreds of years, the murals were the only way uneducated country dwellers could learn about the teachings of the Bible. The frescoes are an immense color illustration of Biblical scenes, adapted to the history of the place and to the important moments in the life of the community.

Marginea Black Pottery – In Northern Romania, the Dacian pottery tradition is carried on by a handful of craftsmen who manufacture black ceramic, according to an atypical process. The pottery made here is famous worldwide, shaped by hand by the craftsmen, fired and then polished, also by hand. The black color of the vessels is due to the firing process. This one is carried out according to an ancient technique, transmitted from generation to generation, the secrets of which have never left Marginea.
